Koneru, who finished second in the Women's World Chess Championship, is also the current two-time Women's World Rapid Chess Champion. Humpy Koneru is an Indian chess player who has gained recognition for her remarkable achievements. Her father was her first teacher when she began playing chess at an early age. At the age of 15, she reached the top and was the youngest woman to receive the title of Grandmother. Humpy has been a recipient of many prestigious titles and competitions throughout her career. In 1999, she won the World Girls Under-14 Chess Championship and in 2006, she won the World Girls Under-14 Chess Championship. The Asian Women's Chess Championship has been won by her multiple times.

Since 2004, she has participated in every edition of the Women's World Chess Championship held in the knockout format after participating for the first time in 2004. Humpy was able to make it to the semifinals in 2004, 2008, and 2010. Alexander Areshchenko, Magesh Panchanathan, and Evgenij Miroshnichenko, along with her, tied for first through fourth place in the Mumbai Mayor Cup in 2009.

Koneru accused the All India Chess Federation of hindering her participation in the 37th Chess Olympiad in Turin in 2009. Koneru Ashok, her father who was coaching her, was prohibited from traveling with her to tournaments. Koneru qualified as a challenger for the Women's World Chess Championship 2011 by finishing second in the FIDE Women's Grand Prix 2009-2011. By winning three games and drawing five, Hou Yifan emerged victorious in the match. In 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015-2016, and 2019-2020 editions of the FIDE Women's Grand Prix series, she finished second.
