Early Life & Education

December 3, 1979 marked Konkona Sen Sharma's birthday. Her father, Mukul Sharma, wrote about science, and her mother, Aparna Sen, performed in and directed movies. Kamalini Chatterjee is her big sister. Chidananda Dasgupta, the grandfather of Sen Sharma's mother, loved movies, wrote about them, and contributed to the creation of the Calcutta Film Society. The famous Bengali poet Jibanananda Das had relatives in her grandmother, Supriya Dasgupta.

The Bengali film Indira (1983) featured Sen Sharma as a child artist and Amodini (1994) as a teenager. In 2001, she obtained a Bachelor's degree in English from St. Stephen's College in Delhi. At Modern High School for Girls, she was enrolled as a student.

In 1983, Konkona made her debut as an actress as a child artist in Indira. In Ek Je Aachhe Kanya (2000), her first significant role as an adult, she played a negative character and demonstrated her versatility early on. Her performance in Mr. and Mrs. Iyer (2002), directed by her mother, was the reason for her widespread acclaim. The National Film Award for Best Actress was given to her for her portrayal of a Tamil housewife who navigated communal tensions.

She was involved in an independent English-language film titled 'Chai Pani Etc…' produced by independent maker Manu Rewal in 2004. The film was well received at the 35th International Film Festival of India, but it was postponed in its theatrical release a year later and became a box office failure.
